Ba·sel [bah-zuhlverb: To visit and enjoy the Art Basel event creatively, knowledgeably and efficiently.

Baseling is an acquired skill arising from  the instant culture that has enveloped Miami Beach and the downtown Art District. There is much to see and do at Art Basel -- perhaps too much -- and the prospect can be daunting without proper guidance.

Untitled Art Fair: New Kid On The Basel Block

Credit Arianna Prothero

The UNTITLED art fair is the new kid on the Basel block. It's the event’s first year.

The fair itself has a distinctly South Florida feel to it. The large, airy white tent has soft, filtered lighting and looks out over the ocean. Adding to the Miami vibe are the girls wandering around promoting various kinds of alcohol by handing out freebies.

Among them were the Hendricks gin girls, Jacqueline Sanabia and Kezia Linden, who, I thought, were wearing some pretty snazzy little hats.

In Overtown, Art From The African Diaspora

Christine DiMattei /WLRN

A vibrant photograph of a very young Michael Jackson with poetry written within his afro.  A spirited oil painting of Bob Marley. A bust of an African woman in ceremonial headdress. A moving fresco featuring a ghostly Bill Clinton surveying the devastation in Haiti.

Those are just a few of the pieces on view at Art Africa Miami.

The exhibition, in the heart of historic Overtown, is dedicated exclusively to the artwork of the African Diaspora.

Human Meets Machine At The Street Experimental Music Festival

Credit artburstmiami.com

For artburstmiami.com

If you hear the words experimental music, you might not think of robots, cyborg belly dancers, old-style televisions morphed into synthesizers, or a human beatbox. But this is exactly the eclectic mix that The Street: Festival of Electronic Music, Art, and Performance purports to offer on a Wynwood sidewalk during Art Basel.

Painted Pianos Pop Up At Art Basel For A Second Year

Pop Up Piano makes it appearance for the second time in Miami.

If you are walking around Art Basel you are probably going to notice these ornately painted pianos.

None of them are painted the same, yet they are all part of an exciting art event playing out at Art Basel Miami for the second year.

It's called Pop Up Piano -- a public arts project put together by Steinway and Sons Miami. The project first appeared at Art Basel last year.

What I Learned In A Night Of Wandering Wynwood During Art Basel

I swear this isn't an oxymoron. Taken at Wynwood Cigar Factory
Daniel Rivero WLRN

Early Thursday, I was forecasting the long day and night ahead of me and came up with a plan: I would wander the Miami neighborhood of Wynwood for the night, and I would blog about it.  The specific assignment that I gave myself was to comb one block, and write a profile of all the street art and the happenings that I would bear witness to.  One block.  One story.  No big deal.

Easier said than done.

How To Basel: Aqua Hotel Is An Art Basel Oasis

This is the eighth year Aqua Hotel has hosted an art fair during Art Basel Miami Beach.
Credit Arianna Prothero

There is a lot to do in Miami during Art Basel so you may not want another item added to your list of “must sees.” Nevertheless, consider including this fair: Aqua Art Miami at the Aqua Hotel on Collins and 15th  Street in Miami Beach.

The fair has a laid-back vibe, lots of art and a good-sized crowd that feels happening without being claustrophobic.

How Fine Art Meets Internet Culture In Wynwood During Art Basel

Mallikarjuna and Ritter wanted a GIF of President Obama dancing to Beyoncé's Single Ladies but couldn't find one. So they made it themselves. It went viral.

  • Moving the Still festival organizers and artists tell us what's so great about the GIF.

Remember those unsettling dancing babies? The ones that got passed around the Internet in the days before social media and eventually made their way onto the Fox TV show, Ally McBeal? Those were GIFs.

GIF stands for graphics interchange format. It's a series of still images, looped --  and last month, after 25 years of existence, it was named the Oxford English Dictionary 2012 American word of the year.

While Art Basel takes Miami by storm, the feeder bands have already reached the fine arts community in Broward County.
