Mindfulness can make you a superhero. That was the message at the first Conscious Kids Festival at Unity on the Bay, a church in Miami, this weekend.

"I liked learning about my body," said Ben Schabacker, age 8. During the festival's opening ceremonies, he watched a screening of part of an episode of Avatar: the Last Airbender that explained the body's seven chakras.

Ben and his family participated in a kids' yoga class later in the day, practicing tree pose, cat-cow, and wheel.

If you're tired of popping pain medicine for your lower back pain, yoga may be a good alternative.

New research finds that a yoga class designed specifically for back pain can be as safe and effective as physical therapy in easing pain.

The yoga protocol was developed by researchers at Boston Medical Center with input from yoga teachers, doctors and physical therapists.

Most of us suffer back pain at some point in our lives. In fact, it's one of the most common reasons people go to the doctor. Many of us also probably reach for medication. Now, new guidelines from the American College of Physicians say try exercise, yoga, or massage first.

That's a pretty big change for both doctors and patients, but a welcome one, some doctors say.

There’s no doubt the South Beach Wine and Food Festival includes many mouth-watering events. The Amstel Light Burger Bash and the Death By Chocolate Dessert Party certainly paint images of dietary free-falls.

But the festival is also starting to reflect growing health trends that are sweeping the nation.

In only two years, the Buddhas and Bellinis event has become a huge hit. On both Saturday and Sunday of the festival, 200 people gathered by the pool of the Raleigh Hotel on South Beach for a yoga class.

She founded Om Brew Yoga -- so far the only yoga classes offered at South Florida breweries -- after learning of the practice in an established craft-beer state.

Relax. Just do it.

In our anxiety-ridden society, finding ways to unwind should be a snap -- not another thing to stress out over. Some find solace with yoga and meditation, a beer at the bar with friends, while others listen to classical music for a mental vacation away from life's stressors.

While relaxation techniques varies from individuals, one thing is certain: Clearing the mind benefits our overall well-being.
