Child marriage isn't just a practice that victimizes girls in poor countries. As this blog has previously reported, it's also long been an issue in the United States, involving girls from a wide range of backgrounds. Based on state marriage license data and other sources, advocacy groups and experts estimate that between 2000 and 2015 alone, well over 200,000 children — nearly all of them girls — were married. In nearly all cases the husband was an adult.

Florida would no longer issue marriage licenses to couples younger than 18 under bill filed Monday by Republican lawmakers.

The graduation ceremony for Florida Keys Community College's Corrections Basic Recruit Academy this week led to more celebration than expected.

Gay Nuptials Expo In Wilton Manors

This summer, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Broward and Palm Beach counties declared Florida’s gay-marriage ban unconstitutional.

Those back-to-back court rulings sparked a Gay Nuptials Expo this past weekend in Broward County.

At the Hagen Park Community Center in Wilton Manors, a red carpet led guests of the Gay Nuptials Expo to a Cher impersonator and a glass of mimosa.

  It only took a few hours for the state Attorney General’s office to appeal Thursday’s Monroe County ruling declaring Florida’s ban on same sex marriage unconstitutional. The appeal means any marriage licenses for gay couples are put on hold.

But Key Westers have been celebrating the decision anyway, calling it a milestone for the island city.
