Fairchild Hopes Chihuly's Colorful Glass Works Will Bring Crowds

Large, colorful, fanciful glass works now dot the lush landscape of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Gardens. The pieces are Dale Chihuly’s encore to his 2005 installation at the gardens.

For this year’s show — the largest-ever for the internationally renowned artist — thousands of pieces of glass were installed at 24 sites in, among and even hanging from trees and plants. Other pieces appear to float in ponds around the gardens.

International Mango Festival Uses Auction As Education

Over the weekend, the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden hosted the 22nd annual International Mango Festival.

The highlight of the festival was what organizers say is the world's only mango auction.

But according to Dr. Richard Campbell, director of horticulture at Fairchild and auction co-host, the festival is not just for buying and selling mango products. It's educational.

International Mango Festival Features Auction, Colombian Mangos

The Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will host the 22nd annual International Mango Festival this weekend in Coral Gables. 

This year's festival is curated by Richard Campbell and Noris Ledesma, of the Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden. 

According to Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden marketing associate Brooke LeMaire, the festival planners anticipate over 9,000 visitors across the two day event.

Bringing A 'Million Orchids' To Florida's Trees

Researchers at a South Florida botanic garden want to return the state's orchids to their former glory.

When railroads first came to Florida in the late 1800s, the plants were among the first resources exploited. Millions of orchids were plucked and sent north as potted plants. Now, after more than a century of logging and harvesting, it's rare to find them growing in the wild here.

But if researchers at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden succeed with their Million Orchid Project, the flowers will soon bloom amid the hustle and bustle of city life.

GardenMusic Festival Kicks Off At Fairchild

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Coral Gables kicks off its second GardenMusic Festival Thursday, Jan. 9. The event features everything from chamber music, to jazz, folk and even Broadway standards.

Members of Sixth Floor Trio, the group that developed the musical program for the festival, say that’s by design.

Summer here is hot and humid--kind of gross. It's the start of hurricane season (groan). However, it's also tropical fruit season. Right in our back yard grows a Seuss-ian wonderland of fruits like monstera deliciosa and white sapote. Perhaps none of these fruits inspires as much obsession as the mango.
