University of Miami Creates Chair for Study of Atheism

The University of Miami will have the nation's first academic chair for the study of atheism

The University of Miami is on the verge of setting a new precedent in religious studies. It’s introducing an Atheism Chair to its faculty.

Retired businessman Louis Appignani donated $2.2 million in April to endow what is said to be the nation’s first academic chair for the study of atheism, humanism and secular ethics, according to the New York Times.

The creation of the new position aligns itself with University President Julio Frenk's goal to create 100 new academic chairs by the school’s centennial anniversary in 2025.

Appignani told the Times he made the donation to eliminate discrimination against atheists.

The university has not yet publicly announced the position.
