Sybrina Fulton announcing her run for Miami-Dade County Commision on May 20.

Sybrina Fulton lost her son, Trayvon Martin, to gun violence in 2012. The story gained national attention, as did the trial where the shooter, George Zimmerman, was acquitted. Fulton started the Trayvon Martin Foundation that year and continues to work with the organization to spread awareness about gun violence. She is now running for Miami-Dade County Commission District Seat 1, against Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert. She joined Sundial to talk about gun violence, her story and campaign.

The Miami Herald is publishing a new series called Priced Out of Paradise focusing on Miami’s rising housing costs. It looks at how and why Miami-Dade County has become one of the most expensive places to live, especially for locals. More than 60 percent of Miami-Dade renters pay more than 30 percent of their salaries on housing — a commonly accepted cutoff for affordability — making the Miami area the third-least affordable city in the country. Herald reporter Rene Rodriguez, one of the contributors to the series, joined Sundial.

Broward and Miami-Dade counties have the highest levels of new HIV diagnoses relative to anywhere else in the country. Local nonprofit Prevention 305 is taking a unique approach to get the message of safe sex and STD testing to as many people as possible. Members are using dating apps like Tinder to spread their message. Marco Torreabla is Prevention 305’s program director. David Jobin is CEO of thefoundationOur Fund, which raises money for LGBTQ organizations around South Florida. They joined Sundial to talk about raising awareness for HIV prevention.
