HITLER'S ISLAND MEGAFORTRESS - In June 1940, the Nazis set foot on British soil. The Channel Islands, a British territory since the 11th century, is now under German rule. Hitler becomes obsessed with holding onto this small corner of Britain and demands the construct of a network of extraordinary fortifications across the island. In his bid to hold on to the territory, the islands become one of the most heavily fortified pieces of land in the whole of Europe.

9pm WORLD WAR II: THE PRICE OF EMPIRE - History

UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER - The Red Army force troops from Soviet territory, while in Japan, Okinawa comes under threat.

Briefly checked in the Battle of the Bulge the Allies succeed in crossing the Rhine and fight their way through Germany as an even more ferocious opponent, drives west ­ the Red Army finally forces Axis troops from Soviet territory and closes on the capital,Berlin. In the Pacific the noose continues to tighten around Japan’s home islands, the threat is to Japanese soil ­ Okinawa.

Adolf Hitler seemed an unlikely leader - fueled by anger, incapable of forming normal human relationships and unwilling to debate political issues. Such was the depth of his hatred that he would become a war criminal arguably without precedent in history.

Yet this strange character was once loved by millions. How was this possible, and what role did Hitler's alleged 'charisma' play in his success?

Mia Laurenzo is a 35-year veteran of public television in Miami. She began her career learning every aspect of video production. Currently she is a writer, producer, on-air host and promotions coordinator for TV, radio and the web.  Her experiences include producing for a series, special events and historical documentaries.  As a native Floridian, she is a perfect fit for South Florida's Storyteller Station, WLRN.  She has produced several award winning, nationally distributed documentaries and is the recipient of three Suncoast Regional Emmys.
