The Miami-based independent movie theater O Cinema will open its third location this fall, in Miami Beach. The City of Miami Beach commission anonymously approved an agreement Wednesday allowing O Cinema to take over management of the Byron-Carlyle Theater.
The 304-seat theater opened in 1968, premiering Jackie Gleason’s film "Skidoo." The theater closed in 2001 and was acquired from the theater theater chain Wometco that opened the theater.
Since then it has been reworked into a playhouse where arts groups like Stage Door Theater have put on events.
“We are excited to be a part of the exciting revitalization efforts for North Beach and eager to bring film culture back to this wonderful community,” said O Cinema co-director Vivian Marthell.
In 2011, O Cinema opened its first location, in the Wynwood neighborhood of Miami with the help of a grant from the Knight Foundation. The second location is in Miami Shores.
The Miami Beach location is at 500 71st St., between Byron and Carlyle avenues. It will be rebranded as O Cinema Miami Beach.
