UPDATE 1:15 p.m.: Florida Power and Light says power has been restored to 60,000 customers this morning. Crews will pull back when winds hit 35 mph.
As Hurricane Irma begins its descent on Florida Saturday morning with bursts of heavy rain and wind, Florida Power & Light is tracking power outages on their site. It has already reported numerous outages in places including Miami, Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach.
Reuters reported that Irma may cut power to more than 4.1 million homes and businesses that are serviced by FPL, which could affect around 9 million people.
“Everyone in Florida will be impacted in some way by this storm,” FPL chief executive Eric Silagy said on Friday at a news conference.
According to FPL’s website, power outages have been reported around Homestead, Florida City, Naranja, South Miami Heights, Kendall, The Crossings, Miami Beach and Miramar.
