Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Steps Down, Joins Sheriff's Office

After more than three decades on the force, Fort Lauderdale police chief Frank Adderley is trading in his blue uniform for a green one.

He’s stepping down as the city’s top cop and stepping in-to a new role at the Broward Sheriff’s Office. He’ll join BSO as a colonel in charge of community affairs.

Broward Sheriff Scott Israel said he and Adderley share the same vision: partnering the police with the community. He’s done it amazingly well in Fort Lauderdale,” Said Israel. “And for him to bring his skill set, his experience to the Broward Sheriff’s Office...you know, he puts us over the top.”

Adderley grew up in northwest Fort Lauderdale and graduated from Stranahan High School. He joined the police department in 1980 and became the department’s first African-American chief of police in 2008.

Sheriff Israel said Adderley’s addition is all part of creating a culture where the community and police are not separate teams. “One’s not the Dolphins and one’s not the Patriots,” said Israel. “We’re the same team - partnering, working together.”

Adderley made the announcement to colleagues at the Fort Lauderdale Police Department Wednesday. He said he plans to make the career switch in mid-January.

No word yet on who will replace him as Fort Lauderdale’s Chief of Police.
