Ron DeSantis was sworn as Florida’s 46th governor on Tuesday. His campaign platforms include increasing school choice, pushing for a more tax-friendly business environment in Florida and tackling the state’s water crisis. WFSU reporter Ryan Dailey joined Sundial after Governor DeSantis's inauguration speech.
One of Governor DeSantis' first expected actions is to nominate a new justice to the Florida Supreme Court. There are three vacancies that need to be filled by his administration. Trelvis Randolph is a partner with the law firm Cole, Scott and Kissane. Randolph recently wrote a piece in the Florida Phoenix about the process of nominating judges to the state’s Supreme Court and the impact new nominees could have on school choice, the state's water crisis and more.
Also, as the federal shutdown goes into its third week, Miami Herald tourism reporter Taylor Dolven looks at its impact on a key aspect – the safety of aircraft. Federal aviation safety officials have been off work for the past several weeks and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has issued a warning to flyers. Dolven joined Sundial to talk about the federal shutdown’s impact on airport safety.
Dolven has also been reporting on the number of people who go overboard on cruises (5 passengers since November of last year). She gives an update on the deaths on Carnival Cruise lines and the lack of protections for cruise passengers.
