FHP Cracking Down on I-95 Driving This Week

Kenny Malone

The people have spoken and now they must slow down.

On Feb. 10, the Florida Highway Patrol launched Operation I-95 Saturation in Miami-Dade County, essentially doubling the number of troopers on one of South Florida’s main arteries. The increased enforcement will be in place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday this week.

“Well, it came about because we’ve gotten complaints that there haven’t been enough troopers out on I-95,” said Trooper Joe Sanchez, a spokesman for the FHP in Miami-Dade County.

FHP has been hearing regularly from concerned drivers about unchecked speeding and reckless driving on 95. In particular, Sanchez says drivers are taking advantage of the 95 Express lanes, where tight shoulders make stopping a motorist difficult and potentially dangerous.

While the speed limits on I-95 in Miami-Dade County change between 55 MPH and 60 MPH, large chunks of the day see average express lane speeds of 65 and 66 MPH.

“We’re going to be out there in large numbers writing tickets,” said Sanchez, “and making sure that people obey the traffic laws.”

FHP will evaluate the temporary operation for future 95 enforcement plans. According to FHP’s official operation plan, the goal is not just “to reduce property damage, reduce deaths and injuries associated with impaired drivers, but the creation of a safer driving environment for the entire motoring public.”
