Federal Court Extends Voter Registration Deadline in Florida

The United States District Court for the Northern District of Florida ordered Secretary of State Ken Detzner to extend the new voter registration deadline to Wednesday October 12, 2016 at 5 p.m.

The official deadline for new voter registration was Tuesday October 11th.

The Florida Democratic Party had sued Detzner and governor Rick Scottafter their petition to extend the deadline due to difficulties caused by hurricane Matthew was denied.

"It has been suggested that the issue of extending the voter registration deadline is about politics. Poppycock," wrote U.S. District Judge Mark E. Walker in his decision to grant a "temporary restraining order" delaying the deadline. "This case is about the right of aspiring eligible voters to register and to have their votes counted.Nothing could be more fundamental to our democracy."

The Court has scheduled a  public hearing of the case on Wednesday October 12 at 10 a.m. in Tallahasee, where it will consider the Democratic Party of Florida's request of a "preliminary injunction."
