Designing a bomb in CHURCHILL'S TOY SHOP

Although Great Britain had pledged to defend Poland against a German invasion during the Second World War, it quickly became apparent to Prime Minister Winston Churchill that his country was woefully unprepared for a large-scale war effort. With limited time and resources available, Churchill set up Military Defense 1, a secret research institute dedicated to developing new weapons as quickly as possible. Much to the chagrin of the existing military establishment, the department reported directly to Churchill as they invented, tested, and facilitated what would become critical implements of the British arsenal.

Featuring rare archival photos and interviews with some of the men who worked in MD1 or used their ingenious weapons in the field, CHURCHILL'S TOY SHOP explores this fascinating but little-known aspect of World War II.
