Throughout the history of the United States, Americans have valued service to others and the community. As Alexis de Tocqueville wrote over a century and a half ago, this ethic of service "prompts [Americans] to assist one another and inclines them willingly to sacrifice a portion of their time and property to the welfare of the state." And, today, consistent with President Bush's 2002 National Call to Service, the ethic remains strong. Volunteering in America is at an all-time high and many of these volunteers are America's youth.
