City officials beat their chests with pride but also listed some problems to focus on in the coming year in Pompano Beach during Thursday’s State of the City address.

Deerfield Beach is following Miami Beach's lead in prohibiting plastic foam containers, like Styrofoam, on the sand.

Deerfield Beach officials banned polystyrene containers, like coffee cups and coolers, from all city events starting October 1. Even vendors can’t use the material, which isn’t biodegradable and often ends up in the ocean.

Cry for Water is a nonprofit conservation group that fears the new sand will destroy the coral or make them vulnerable to diseases.

Dan Clark is the group's director. He says the Army Corps of Engineers did a less than complete review of the project.
