Florida ranks among the bottom states for the number of manufacturing jobs. Lawmakers eliminated the sales tax on manufacturing equipment, hoping to lure more companies.

Manufacturing isn't a booming industry in Florida, but many hope that will change thanks to a vote by the state Legislature.

Starting next spring, manufacturing companies will be able to buy equipment in Florida without paying sales tax on it.

That means less revenue initially for the state, but supporters say the move will help boost the industry and create jobs in Florida.

Manufacturing Is At The Heart Of This Growing Broward Medical Business

Workers at New Wave Surgical are paid an hourly rate and offered a full-time employee benefits package. The company is relocating from Coral Springs to a larger facility in Pompano Beach.

New Wave Surgical, a Pompano Beach based company, didn't start out in the manufacturing business.

The founder and president, Ricardo Alexander Gomez, wanted to focus on design and sales of a medical device called D-HELP.

The product helps surgeons clean the lenses of tools used during laparascopic surgeries.

Revenues grew once Gomez and his staff were able to decrease costs of producing the device.

Gomez says revenue is up 1900%.

On the right is a picture of lancets.

These are small devices used by diabetics to prick their fingers in order to test their blood for sugar. The maker of these devices, Specialty Medical Supplies, is based in Coral Springs. The company was manufacturing up to 100 million of them each month in China until June of this year, when the company's president, Chip Starnes, was taken hostage during a visit to his Beijing plant.
