Coral Gables

My father, Ernest Peyton Jones, worked for President Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was his campaign manager for the southeastern United States and became the associate commissioner of the Federal Housing Administration.   My mother, Betty Schwab Jones, was the secretary for Sen. George Norris of Nebraska. They married in 1936 and lived in Washington.

For many years I both lived and worked in Coral Gables, and since my house was less than a mile from work, I decided to ditch my car and purchased a scooter. I conveniently biked, walked or scootered around town. I could get to the beach or the Grove by scooter, bike or public transportation.

Books & Books

It's been 30 years since the independent bookstore, Books & Books, first opened its doors in Coral Gables, and this week, they're celebrating.

Today there are stores throughout the region and beyond. There are three South Florida stores, as well as outposts at the Miami International Airport and the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale,  and stores in Grand Cayman and Westhampton Beach, New York, too.

WLRN

Florida voters could decide the 2012 presidential election. We have more electoral votes than any other swing state. Miami Herald Pulitzer-Prize winning photographer Patrick Farrell and WLRN-Miami Herald News radio reporter Kenny Malone are on a 10-day quest to capture the faces and voices of the powerful Florida voter. Maybe it's an oyster farmer in Apalachicola, a psychic in Cassadaga, a bartender in Cedar Key, a tomato picker in Immokalee.

Join us for a discussion upon their return.
