Alonzo Mourning likes to tell the story about a deflated basketball on the desk of his Georgetown coach John Thompson.

He calls that deflated basketball from his collegiate years a "powerful statement because many of us as young athletes think that basketball is it." 

Mourning told the story during his enshrinement in the NBA Hall of Fame in August of 2014. It is a story he uses to illustrate his desire to give back.

Knight Cities Challenges Opens Applications in Miami

The James L. Knight foundation is opening applications in Miami for its first-ever Knight Cities Challenge, which looks to make cities better and more successful.

Twenty-five communities across the United States will vie for a share of $5 million. According to a press release, the ideas can originate from anywhere, but they must benefit Miami or one of the other 25 Knight communities.

A state bill follows a Tampa Bay Times investigation into the country’s worst charities. The report focused on non-profits that spend a lot of money on solicitors.

A sweeping charities reform package is breezing through the Florida Legislature despite earlier concerns that legitimate philanthropies might be harmed by new rules.

The House bill received unanimous support in three committees and is now ready for a vote on the floor. The Senate bill has one more committee, and members who had been worried about reputable charities now say their issues have been addressed.
