Senegal, Mali, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Haiti, Cuba and the Bahamas will all be among countries represented at the eighth annual African Diaspora Dance and Drum Festival of Florida this weekend at the Little Haiti Cultural Complex.

Saturday, Jan. 24 will see the union of two musical acts in celebration of Afrobeat music at the main stage of the South Miami-Dade Cultural Arts Center. 

Zap Mama and Antibalas will come together as one band. 

“We are merging the two bands, not [performing] one after another,” says Marie Daulne, the voice behind the female vocal ensemble Zap Mama.  

Julius and Julia Sanna are two South Florida-based musicians who bring our area African culture and music via two bands, Positively Africa and the Julius Sanna Band.

In this interview, they discuss their influences and the challenges of marketing their message.
