What Art Basel Has Done For Miami

ianbart

Art Basel begins this week, and WLRN will be your guide.  In a special hour hosted by WLRN's arts editor, Alicia Zuckerman, we give you tips on what to see, and how.  Plus we look at the fair's history and how it's shaped Miami.

Art Basel Miami Beach describes itself as the most prestigious show in the Americas.  But what impact does it have on the local artist community?   Every year hundreds of millions of dollars of deals are made at the fair with purchases by collectors from around the world.  Does money from those deals trickle down to Miami?  Would Wynwood and the Design District have been possible without Art Basel?  Artist George Sanchez Calderon and Wynwood developer David Lombardi share their observations.

What’s described as “Art Basel” is really shorthand for hundreds of arts events throughout Miami.  From a pop-up piano that doubles as a butterfly garden to a huge fortune-telling laser-eyed dog to beautiful sculptural pieces of furniture at Design Miami, this week has something for everyone.  We speak to Miami New Times' Ciara LaVelle and Social Miami's Amy Rosenberg on how to plan your week.

This is the 11th year of the Miami Beach fair, which a group of gallerists in Switzerland began in 1970.  Since then, the number of fairs has exploded.  How is this fair stand out?  And how exactly is the art chosen?   The Miami Herald’s Jane Wooldridge gives us context to understand the phenomenon that is Art Basel Miami Beach.

Join us tomorrow at 11am and follow us on Twitter @WLRN for the latest.
