Jose Iglesias, El Nuevo Herald

Terence Cantarella, the man behind WLRN’s Canoe Project, crossed multiple lanes of traffic yesterday– and Jose Iglesias of El Nuevo Herald got it all on video.

The Canoe Project is WLRN’s effort to shed some light on the unrecognized backdrop to our lives here in Miami-Dade: our city’s vast network of canals. These waterways completely surround us, yet, many of us don’t know where they go or why they are there.

Terence volunteered to take a canoe through the waterways and circumnavigate the county via the canal system and the Miami River to tell the story of the canals through his own four-day journey.

Yesterday, his journey took him to what Sean Rowe– the last person to make a similar trip– called the “Tunnel of Doom.

The tunnel, Terence explains, is a small enclosed opening that connects the Miami River going underneath Okeechobee Road. He says the tunnel is “low and dark, full of dead animals.”

“It takes a long time to get through it,” he explains. He also noted that there are now “metal bars” at the end, making it impossible to get back on the river even if he does make it through the nightmarish tunnel.

“So, I am going to have to carry the canoe across about twelve lanes of traffic on Okeechobee,” he says.
