Solar Energy In The Sunshine State

Solar Energy Tampa Florida/flickr

04/14/15 - Tune in for Tuesday’s Topical Currents and a discussion of solar energy . . . in the Sunshine State. The Florida Legislature is not on board to allow consumers to buy solar-generated electricity from non-monopoly corporations.  It’s one of five U.S. states that make such a restriction. However, FPL is a national leader in power company solar investment. GUESTS In-studio: Steve Smith, Exec. Dir., Southern Alliance for Clean Energy; Mike Antheil, Exec. Dir., Florida Solar Energy Industries association/Florida Alliance for Renewable Energy. They are co-founders of Floridians for Solar Choice a nonprofit  coalition made up of different organizations working to pass a Florida constitutional amendment to allow third party solar sales in Florida. Also joining us, by phone, is Neville Williams, solar power pioneer, advocate, and entrepreneur. Take part in the discussion . . . on Topical Currents.  Tuesday at 1pm.

Richard Ives came to WLRN in September 2000 to begin a new career in radio. Born in Fort Lauderdale, his family moved to Long Island, New York, where he grew up. After graduation from college and an unsatisfying stint in a job that, as he puts it, "paid the bills but for which I had no passion" he found himself contemplating a midlife career change after being laid-off.
