A Scoop Of 'Black Ice Cream' With Tinsel On Top

Helado Negro

He’s been called a “sound artist,” and a “sonic stylist.”  His music has been described as “genre-defying.”  It seems that fans and music critics alike are always struggling to describe exactly what Roberto Carlos Lange does for a living.

“I struggle with it,” says Lange with a smile.

The Brooklyn-based, South Florida-born artist says he’s not into labels.  “When people label something, I oppose it,” he says. “And, so then, I sabotage that label.”

But a metaphor?  That’s a different story.  Take his stage name: Helado Negro, Spanish for black ice cream.

“I like to think of Helado Negro being a food from a place that doesn’t exist,” says Lange. “And it draws a parallel to what I like to do, which is finding things that are mysterious.”

His latest work, appearing at Perez Art Museum Miamion Thursday, May 14, is likely to deepen that mystery. The work features Lange’s signature electronic music and includes costumed dancers, covered head to foot in silver tinsel, each one looking like a metallic Cousin It.  The costumes were designed by Lange, who describes them simply as “sculptural moving beings.”

The piece, titled “No Love Can Cut Our Knife In Two,” is part of PAMM’s “WAVES” series, specially commissioned performances fusing music, dance, video and visual art.
