Palm Beach County is waging war on mosquitoes.
The county’s Division of Mosquito Control was to begin aerial spraying from a helicopter at sundown Tuesday. Spraying will cover about 270,000 acres west of Military Trail.
Recent rains have led to big increases in flood water mosquitoes, and salt marsh mosquitoes have been riding southwest winds up from the Florida Keys, according to Chris Reisinger, environmental analyst at the division. These are not species that carry the Zika virus.
“There’s no disease concern right now,” said Reisinger. “These are known as nuisance mosquitoes for the most part. We’re monitoring, but we’re not seeing disease in the population now.”
The county will spray the organophosphate pesticide naled to control the mosquito populations, Reisinger said.
