The Wolfsonian-FIU Museum's newest exhibit chronicles an arts enterprise at Tulane University's former women's college. From 1895 to 1940, students sold pottery, embroidery and jewelry made in the program.
In the spirit of the Newcomb Pottery Enterprise, the Wolfsonian is launching a month-long women’s film series, titled “Leading Ladies.” Each Friday in August at 7 p.m., the museum will screen classic movies starring women.
Here’s the lineup:
Aug. 7: “His Girl Friday” (1940)
In one of her best-known roles, Rosalind Russell plays veteran reporter Hildy Johnson. Her ex-husband and former editor Walter Burns, played by Cary Grant, wants Hildy to cover one last story before she marries an insurance man.
Aug. 14: “Adam’s Rib” (1949)
Hollywood legends Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy play attorneys on opposing sides of a murder trial. The writers, Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin, were nominated for the Academy Award for Best Screenplay in 1950.
Aug. 21: “Norma Rae” (1979)
Sally Field won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of title character Norma Rae Webster. Norma works in a textile factory in North Carolina and becomes involved in labor union activism. “Norma Rae” was also nominated for Best Picture and for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1980.
Aug. 28: “Nine to Five” (1980)
In this classic workplace comedy, Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin work for a sexist boss. They soon find themselves covering up a mishap that could land them in jail. Netflix recently reunited Fonda and Tomlin for the dark comedy “Grace and Frankie.”
