Miami-Dade Police Assistant Director Alfredo Ramirez addressed reporters a block away from Nicklaus Children's Hospital Friday evening.

Nicklaus Children's Hospital received multiple phone calls reporting an active shooter and a bomb threat on Friday at around 2:58 p.m., according to the Miami-Dade Police Department.

The police department's assistant director, Alfredo Ramirez, said the hospital,  at 3100 SW 62nd Ave., responded quickly.

They "immediately implemented their emergency procedures and contacted us," he said.

The call reporting an active shooter on the hospital campus came while police were on the property starting to look for a potential explosive. No such device was found and the all-clear was given a few hours later.

"We are currently conducting an investigation on the origin of the phone calls that came in regarding these threats," Ramirez said.

He urged the public to call police if they have any information about where these threatening calls came from.

The hospital released a statement during the search.

"Together with law enforcement,  we are taking measures to safeguard children, families and our staff in light of this situation."

Ramirez said the non-critical children inside, as well as faculty and staff,  were evacuated to safety while police swept the grounds for any explosive devices. Children too critical to move stayed in the hospital with their doctors and nurses, who were given a police escort during the sweep.

In the wake of Thursday night's  shooting in Dallas, Ramirez was asked by a member of the media if police responded differently to Friday's local threats than they normally would have.

"No, we respond like this to all critical events," Ramirez said.

Police say they would continue a heightened presence at the hospital after the sweeps  ended.
