NEWSCAST: Surprise Box Of Uncounted Ballots Discovered In Broward

Broward County is still tallying up votes in two recounts from last week’s election.

In Dania Beach's close commission race, Chickie Brandimartie leads Mac McElyea by just 16 votes out of more than 4,000. In Hallandale Beach, it's even closer with Anthony Sanders leading Michele Lazarow by just 6 votes out of more than 7,000.

And the Sun-Sentinel reports that nearly a thousand uncounted ballots were discovered in a Broward warehouse on Monday.

NEWSCAST: South Florida is still counting its ballots.

Further up the East Coast, 42 doctors, nurses, paramedics, pharmacists and medical responders form South Florida have arrived in New York and New Jersey. They're providing medical support to areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The Floridian first responders are members of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Florida 5 Disaster Medical Assistance Team.

The group was formed in 1994 after Hurricane Andrew exposed a need for this kind of coordinated relief effort.

Mike Jachles, a spokesperson for the Broward Sheriff's Office and says the group includes medical professionals from all five South Florida counties -- from Monroe to Martin.

“They might be in the hospital, they might be in field hospitals, they might be doing anything you can imagine if it’s medically related to provide support,” says Jachles.

The need for relief medical personnel has been compounded by the fact that this storm hit so late in the season. And a few days later, the region was the target of a snowstorm.
