Miami Non-Profit Trains Residents How To Advocate At Miami-Dade Budget Hearings

Florida New Majority
Florida New Majority trains resident on how to advocate at budget hearings.

As Miami-Dade County prepares for public input on its budget, a local non-profit is teaching residents how to advocate for the causes they care about.

Going through Miami-Dade’s $7 billion budget can be a daunting task for the average citizen.

That is why Florida New Majority says it created a series of workshops to teach the public how to find information in the voluminous budget document.

"It's three volumes, about 800 plus pages and that's very hard for someone to sit down and really analyze," said Nancy Metayer, climate justice organizer at Florida New Majority.

The workshops also train residents how to tell their stories about how budget decisions affect them. There are two public budget hearings scheduled for September where residents typically get two minutes to speak to commissioners about the budget.

Organizers at Florida New Majority are helping residents draft their talking points to communicate why the county should invest in a particular issue and highlight areas that the county isn’t investing enough in.

If you go:
