Miami Dade County Commission Puts Off Ludlam Trail Decision

The Miami Dade County Commission was supposed to decide on Thursday the fate of Ludlam Trail-- a six-mile corridor from Miami International Airport to South Miami that’s home to abandoned railroad tracks.

Florida East Coast Industriesowns the property and was hoping for approval to build homes on the vacant land.

But after more than five hours, the commission said they needed more time to decide. So they suggested something that has never been done before: for FECI to withdraw their private application and for the commission to resubmit it as a Miami-Dade County application.

Joe Goldstein, an attorney representing FECI, says the first step is for the commission to file the application.

"Once they do that, we'll be working with staff probably starting tomorrow to help them put their application together in a manner that we're amenable to," he said.

Stuart Grant is an architect and planner in Miami. He’s part of “Friends of Ludlam Trail” -- the organization fighting for a lush linear park on the property instead of housing.

"I think its a good thing that the dialogue will continue and there's still high hopes for a really good trail," says Grant.

As part of the motion, charrettes will be held in the neighboring county council districts so the community can continue to weigh in on the final decision. That final decision won’t be made until May of 2015.
