It's a Wild Night on WLRN!

Starting at 8:00 p.m. on Monday, May 19, tune into a night of natural wonders! Watch the magic of Ireland’s wild river, the search for a rehabilitated otter and the mysterious connection between humans and a baby killer whale.

Nature: Ireland’s Wild River (8:00 pm)

Nature: Ireland's Wild River

The Shannon is Ireland’s greatest geographical landmark and longest river. It is both a barrier and highway – a silver ribbon holding back the rugged landscapes of the west from the gentler plains to the east. On its journey south, the Shannon passes through a huge palette of rural landscapes, where on little-known backwaters, Ireland’s wild animals and plants still thrive as almost nowhere else. For a year, wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson lives on the river — camping on its banks, exploring its countless tributaries in a traditional canoe, following the river from dawn to dusk through the four seasons, on a quest to film the natural history of the Shannon as it has never been seen or heard or experienced before.

Wild! Giant Otters (9:00 pm)

Diane McTurk is an inspirational woman. At the age of 74 she is famous for her successes with the rehabilitation of rescued, orphaned giant otter pups. We follow her as she goes in search of an otter she hasn’t seen for a year. Having to face caiman, predatory fish and territorial wild otters, what are their chances of survival once they are ready to leave her care?

Saving Luna (10:00 pm)

Luna, a baby killer whale, gets separated from his family on the wild coast of Vancouver Island. All alone, he seems determined to make friends with humans. People throughout the community fall in love with him, including: a cook on an old freighter; an elder and a young man from a First Nations band; and a gruff fisheries officer. The husband-and-wife production team of Mike Parfit and Suzanne Chisholm, initially in the area to document the story for the media, get drawn into the drama.
