The kindergarten class from Lorah Park Elementary got to explore inside an Air Force plane Friday.

Hundreds of kids got to explore inside Air Force and Coast Guard planes Friday at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.

Major Devan Meister gave tours of the WC-130 J, which she says is the most powerful plane in the Air Force. The plane flies directly into a hurricane to collect data.

Meister says educating kids is a great way to get the message of hurricane preparedness out to families as well.

"The little ones I just try and tell a little bit about what we do and tell them to look for the forecasts on television and motivate their parents to come up with an evacuation plan," Meister says.

It was all part of the National Hurricane Center's Hurricane Awareness Tour, which wrapped up on Friday. The tour took hurricane aircraft, meteorologists, and disaster preparedness specialists to six cities along the east coast to spread the word about what people can do before hurricane season, which begins June 1st.

The National Hurricane Center has gone on an annual hurricane awareness tour for more than 35 years. Organizers say this year they've reached more people than ever using a webinar and social media.
