Florida Roundup: U.S. And Cuba At The Summit

On the Florida Roundup, we discuss the week's top news with area journalists.

Summit of the Americas

The State Department recommended this week removing Cuba from the U.S. list of countries that sponsor terrorism - a move that could speed up normalizing relations with the island. Though no formal announcement has been made yet to remove Cuba from the list, Obama said a decision on it would be soon. The two leaders will be together at the Summit of the Americas for the first time.

Presidential Aspirations

Marco Rubio is expected to announce his intentions to run for president on the steps of the downtown Freedom Tower on Monday. But the race for campaign funds is likely underway after Rubio supporters opened a Super PAC this week. If Jeb Bush officially shares he will go after the position in the Oval Office, too, the state Republican party may feel divided between its two political stars.

Medicaid And The Budget

Florida lawmakers are not closer to agreeing on a budget. The issue of health care and expanding coverage continues to be debated after Gov. Scott shared he didn't trust the government to pay for Medicaid. Following the comments, the Senate delayed a confirmation hearing for Scott's pick for Surgeon General.

Transportation

The opening of a Tri-Rail station at Miami International Airportdid not start off smoothly as riders dealt with long delays. Despite this, commissioners are trying to keep dreams of a downtown Miami Tri-Railstation alive. Also, plans for a more walkable Biscayne Boulevard could happen sooner than you think.
