Friday is the last day of classes for Miami-Dade and Broward County public schools. Students are on Spring Break next week. Florida Highway Patrol visited South Miami High school to warn students about driving during the break.
This is Trooper Joe Sanchez’s fifth year visiting South Miami students.
"We expect more motorists out on the road. Our traffic is gonna increase in South Florida," says Sanchez. "Come down here. Have a great time. Enjoy yourself, but be careful."
He says because there are more drivers on the streets, there are usually more incidents.
The high schoolers met for first period lunch in the outside "spill out" area between the two South Miami High buildings. Sanchez brought a car in a rotating device and with dummies, demonstrated how easily people can eject from a car without wearing seat belts.
The students laughed and clapped as dummies flew out of the spinning car.
"It was funny, but in real life that wouldn't be funny," said senior Angie Larosa.
She's been driving for almost a year and says the local roads are "pretty bad."
"Sometimes people cut you off," says Larosa. "I'm driving and they just get next to me and get really close, or they'll tailgate me."
William Belloso is a junior and just started driving. He says other Miami drivers have almost crashed into him a couple times.
"I’m afraid as soon as I get to the highway I'm gonna get into a car crash," says Belloso.
But he says he won’t let his fear of Florida highways stop him from going to Miami beach next week.
