Position Summary:

The Director of Engineering oversees and manages all broadcast and production engineering services for WLRN Public Media. Responsible for all maintenance, testing, modification, documentation and supervision of the technical operation in compliance with all FCC rules and regulations.


Extensive knowledge of broadcast electronics, RF broadcast operations, legacy video technology, digital delivery systems, automation systems and technical systems design.

Stay current on new technology and developments serving as WLRN’s technical advisor to the General Manager and management staff.

Experience managing complex technical projects.

Thorough knowledge of FCC rules, regulations and compliance requirements.

Excellent judgment and ability to diagnose, problem solve and handle complex issues under pressure or in emergency situations.

Excellent verbal communications and written skills with the ability to research, design and document procedures, workflows and processes.

Ability to supervise contractors effectively.

Ability work in an on-call environment and with a flexible schedule, including extended hours on occasion at night or weekends.

Ability to lift 50 pounds and carry short distances

Able to manage budget and prepare bids

Establish engineering policies and procedures and maintain equipment inventory.
Able to supervise and train staff on use of equipment.

Resourceful approach to engineering and equipment procurement.

Self-starter and able to work with moderate supervision.

Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or commensurate experience.

Twelve (12) years of station-level broadcast television and/or radio engineering experience.

Previous public television/newtwork  station experience and familiarity with content distribution systems, content storage and retrieval systems.

Experience managing complex technical projects.

Preferred Skills and Experience:

Bilingual (English/Spanish - oral and written).
