Buses Vs. Trains? Ask Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez About Changes to SMART Plan

Miami Herald file photo
Miami-Dade County leaders are hoping their multi-billion-dollar, multi-decade transit plan will provide commuters with alternatives to rush hour traffic jams.

Mayor Carlos Gimenez last year was a big supporter of the Miami-Dade County SMART Plan to build trains along six high-traffic travel corridors. But the mayor recently changed his position. He and county transportation director Alice Bravo now recommend the county use rapid transit buses instead of trains because they’d be less costly to put into place and could be rolled out much more quickly.

On Friday, July 28, WLRN is speaking with Mayor Gimenez about the SMART Plan and the proposal to use buses instead of trains.
