Bomb Threat Leads To Backpack Ban In Pembroke Pines School

Some middle schoolers in Broward County were asked to go without their backpacks to school Thursday.

Pembroke Pines police and Broward County Schools determined that an email to a teacher at Silver Trail Middle School alluding to a bomb was credible enough to do a full search of the school.

This threat is the second of its kind: the same message was sent to the same teacher in April. In that instance the school was evacuated

They requested that students not bring in any knapsacks, backpacks or book bags – anything that could conceal an explosive. Parents and teachers were notified by text, email and automated telephone calls early this morning.

Captain Al Xiques with the Pembroke Pines Police Department says the police response went without a hitch.

“We always take these kinds of situations very seriously,” he says, “you can’t leave it to chance that this may be a hoax because it may not be.”

Part of the rapid response, he says, is their close ties to the schools.

The police are still investigating the threat. A search including canines turned up nothing and school officials decided to allow kids to come to school this morning.

Students will be allowed back with their usual school accessories on Friday.
