Baby Animals and Bird Brains

7pm WILD SCHOOL: Elephant Seals - Nature/Documentary

Join a cast of cute and cheeky animal orphans as they learn the vital lessons they need to leave captivity and survive in the wild.

IN THIS EPISODE: The cast and crew visit the coast of California to a place where elephant seals call home. Their challenge... to survive in their natural habitats while often sharing the coast with humans.  Sometimes nature needs a helping hand and that's where these two worlds meet.

8pm NATURE: Animal Childhood - Nature/Documentary

In every animal’s life, there comes a time when it must make its own way in the world. For many, this happens just moments after birth when they have to rely entirely on their instincts to survive. But for some youngsters, there is time to grow up under their parents’ tutelage and care.  They are nurtured and taught the necessary skills to help them survive in the wild when they leave home.

9pm BEAK AND BRAIN: Genius Birds From Down Under - Nature

The term "birdbrain" generally isn’t used as a compliment, but in BEAK AND BRAIN: GENIUS BIRDS FROM DOWN UNDER, we meet the feathered prodigies whose smarts defy stereotypes.  This memorable hour-long documentary investigates two of the cleverest creatures in the animal kingdom: the humorous, agile keas of New Zealand and the steadfast, patient crows of New Caledonia. Keas, the only species of parrot that live in a snowy, mountainous region, enjoy solving puzzles and dismantling small objects. Thousands of miles north in the archipelago of New Caledonia, talented crows produce sets of tools – each of which serves a particular purpose. In the ultimate avian I.Q. test, BEAK AND BRAIN determines which of these species is the smartest – with some funny and surprising results.
