3 New Local Zika Cases Reported In South Florida

WMFE

State health officials said Wednesday that three more locally transmitted cases of the Zika virus have been found in South Florida, with each having ties to Miami-Dade County.

Two of the people infected with the mosquito-borne virus were Miami-Dade County residents, while another was a Broward County resident who frequently traveled to Miami-Dade, according to information posted on the state website.

Health officials were investigating to determine where the residents were exposed to the virus, though the department said it does not believe any transmission occurred in Broward County.

The three cases brought to 228 the number of people infected in Florida. Also, the state has had 927 "travel-related" cases, which involve people who were infected with Zika elsewhere and brought the virus into Florida.

Another new case announced Wednesday involved a state resident who had traveled to Miami and to an area outside of Florida where Zika has been widely transmitted. The department said it is "inconclusive" where the person was exposed to the virus.
