Florida Sheriffs: Keep 'Stand Your Ground' As Written

The Florida Sheriffs Association is no longer neutral on the state's controversial "stand your ground" law.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd, the new president of the association, announced Friday that members agreed earlier this week without opposition to support the law "as currently written."

"Our current judicial system is comprised of multiple checks and balances to ensure fair and equitable application of all laws, including 'stand your ground,' " Judd said in a prepared statement.

At University of Miami, A-Rod Scandal Haunts Stadium Named in His Honor

A baseball stadium at the University of Miami was renamed in honor of Yankees player Alex Rodriguez after he donated $3.9 million to renovate the stadium in 2003.

New York Yankees superstar Alex Rodriguez had his professional legacy altered forever when he admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs four years ago. Now, A-Rod is fighting even more severe accusations as his philanthropic legacy in Miami hangs in the balance.

The famous ballplayer is currently appealing his 211-game suspension from Major League Baseball. The scandal has prompted locals to ask whether the local organizations he has supported will distance themselves from him.

South Florida Mayors’ MMA Fight Called Off After Pizzi’s Arrest

The charity fight between former Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi and Hialeah Mayor Carlos Hernandez has been called off due to Pizzi’s arrest Tuesday.

Pizzi was arrested Tuesday morning on bribery charges stemming from an FBI sting investigation, along with Sweetwater Mayor Manuel "Manny" Maroño.

Hernandez called the arrests “a very unfortunate event for not only Miami Lakes and Sweetwater, but all of South Florida.”

He is also disappointed that he won’t be able to duke it out with Pizzi in the octagon.

Why There's An Atmosphere Of Crisis In The Humanities

The number of humanities majors are in rapid decline, as is students' interest in reading and -- interestingly -- reading test scores.

“Why do we have to learn this?” Every teacher has heard a student ask this question.  It is often followed with, “When will I ever use this?” 

Perhaps anyone who was ever a student – i.e. all of us – has either uttered or thought the very same thing.  And they are indeed valid questions.

After all, when will the average person need to calculate the square root of an imaginary number? Or determine how many moles of oxide are in a substance? Or explain the difference between Aristotelian and Shakespearean tragedies? 

In all honesty, the answer is probably never.
